Position Title: Refugee Foster Care Therapist

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

Full or part-time status: Full-time

Department: Migration and Refugee Services

Reports to: Lead Therapist

Hiring Range: $58,000-$78,000/yr. DOE

Primary Function of Position

As a therapist, you will provide dedicated mental health services to refugee and immigrant foster youth and consult with foster families. This role encompasses conducting comprehensive mental health assessments, delivering therapy (primarily individual), and offering critical crisis intervention when necessary.

Major Position Responsibilities

  1. Therapeutic Connection: Establish and nurture therapeutic relationships with youth in the Refugee Foster Care program.
  2. Assessment Expertise: Conduct Refugee Health Screenings and mental health assessments upon clients' arrival.
  3. Individual Therapy: Provide one-on-one therapy to youth, involving assessment, diagnosis, the creation of treatment goals, and meticulous documentation of progress and discharge.
  4. Group Facilitation: The chance to facilitate group therapy sessions to address the unique needs of the youth.
  5. Family-Centered Care: Occasionally offer family therapy sessions, collaborating closely with foster families to ensure holistic well-being.
  6. Consultative Support: Provide consultative support to the team concerning placement decisions, trauma-informed care, and crisis intervention strategies, contributing to the welfare of the clients.
  7. Level of Care Guidance: Collaborate in determining the appropriate therapeutic level of care for foster families based on the mental wellbeing and needs of foster youth, optimizing the support provided.
  8. Continual Learning: Actively participate in internal and community-provided training programs, applying newly acquired knowledge to enhance service delivery.
  9. Team Engagement: Attend weekly staff meetings, occasional home visits, parties and events, and consultative meetings to contribute insights and align with program goals.
  10. Training Facilitation: Facilitate training for both staff and foster parents relevant to challenges fostering and working with foster youth.
  11. Meticulous Documentation: Maintain thorough and compliant case files per all Catholic Community Services, Department of Professional Licensing, state, and federal regulations that are in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  12. Additional duties as assigned.  

Work Environment

  1. Therapeutic services will be flexible to meet the youth's needs and may include time in the office, outside, or at the youth's home or school.

Physical Demands

  1. The role requires sitting, standing, walking moderate distances, and driving.
  2. Occasional assistance with physical activities may be necessary, such as event setup for RFC events.

  2. Problem-Solving: Exhibits adeptness in identifying and resolving issues while proactively working to prevent them, while following ethical and legal standards of mental health counseling
  3. Sensitivity: Displays a keen understanding and consideration for the diverse needs of individuals within the scope of work. Adapts therapeutic theory and practices to align with the needs of various cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
  4. Time Management: Acknowledges the importance of time management and promptly addresses the needs of clients and colleagues.
  5. Efficient Tasks: Demonstrates a consistent ability to complete tasks while adhering to established deadlines.
  6. Preferred Bilingual Proficiency: Possesses fluent bilingual communication skills in English and another language spoken by clients (Spanish, Farsi, etc.) in both oral and written forms.
  7. Adaptability: Exhibits adaptability, creativity, and competence when operating in diverse environments and contexts.
  8. Client Rapport: Shows an innate ability to establish strong connections with clients, facilitating their adaptation to new situations.
  9. Confidentiality: Maintains the utmost discretion and confidentiality concerning client-related information.
  10. Team Collaboration: Collaborates with the team concerning behavioral, mental health, safety, and educational concerns. Is comfortable consulting with social workers and supervisors regarding youth care.
  11. Computer Proficiency: Possesses advanced computer proficiency, effectively utilizing software tools such as Outlook and Excel for tasks like maintaining case files, documentation, scheduling, and email correspondence.

Education, Training, and Experience

  1. Possession of a master's degree in social work or clinical mental health counseling from an accredited university.
  2. Obtain LCSW or CMHC certification within two years of hire.
  3. Familiarity with trauma-informed treatment modalities.
  4. Strongly preferred: Experience with teenagers, attachment, gender-based violence, and familiarity with the refugee and immigrant community.

Background Screening Requirement

  1. Must pass a national BCI/FBI background check.

Licenses, certifications, and credentials

  1. A current Utah driver's license and provide proof of auto insurance meeting minimum policy liability limits of $50,000 per person and $100,000 per incident. Additionally, be 21 years of age or older, maintain a clean driving record, and have the capacity to fulfill CCS vehicle safety standards.

Position status and expected schedule

  1. Hours are flexible. Scheduling will be managed by the therapist to accommodate youth needs and optimal assistance for supporting the team. The standard schedule is 40 hours between Monday and Friday, 8:30 AM and 8:00 PM with occasional crisis support.
