Position Overview

The Director of Development and Community Engagement is a key leadership position responsible for advancing the mission of NAMI Utah through strategic fundraising, communications, and community outreach. This role leads efforts to secure philanthropic support from individuals, foundations, and corporate partners, while also overseeing the organization’s communications strategy and fostering relationships within the community to increase visibility and impact.


Development & Fundraising 

  • Develop and implement annual and long-term fundraising plans to meet revenue goals.
  • Cultivate and steward relationships with donors, foundations, and corporate sponsors.
  • Research and write compelling grant proposals and reports.
  • Manage donor database and ensure timely acknowledgments and reporting.
  • Plan and execute the annual NAMI Walk, fundraising campaigns, donor events, and appeals.

Communications & Public Relations

  • Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive communications plan.
  •  Manage the organization’s brand voice across all platforms, including website, social media, email newsletters, and printed materials.
  • Create compelling content that tells the story of our mission and impact.
  •  Serve as our media contact and coordinate public relations opportunities. 

Community Outreach & Engagement

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with community partners, coalitions, and stakeholders.
  • Develop and oversee the NAMI Utah affiliate program, supervising the affiliate coordinator in efforts to bring awareness to mental illness and           NAMI Utah at the grassroots, community level.
  • Assure NAMI Utah is meeting expectations of NAMI national office
  • Work with affiliate coordinator to provide statewide trainings, support meetings and annual retreat for volunteer affiliate leaders.

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, communications, or community engagement (or equivalent combination).
  • Proven success in grant writing, donor cultivation, and meeting fundraising goals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit communications, branding, and messaging.
  • Culturally responsive and experienced in engaging diverse communities.
  • Self-directed, highly organized, and collaborative.
  • Familiarity with donor management software and communication tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in mental health, peer support, or human services sector.
  • Bilingual or multilingual is a plus.
  • Knowledge of local and regional funding sources, especially in Utah and Salt Lake County
